Do the subjects in BMM help you know the reality of the job? Is there any place for theory in the industry you’re in?

Theory is necessary but a lot of times we understood theory not in the clasroom but while we were executing projects so the 50:50 mixture is just tailor made for brilliance

Professional Experience 2

You Currently Work At BIG Cinemas – Marketing – Executive

Your daily routine My job entitles me to watch movies. Lots and lots of movies. So typically I watch 2-4 movies in a week.. And I’m certainly not complaining!
On a more serious note, work revolves around making BIG Cinemas an enriching experience for all our customers, with the help of the digital and print media on a day-to-day basis.

Organization(s) You Worked At Before

Trainee at Encompass Events,

Trainee at Contiloe Films,

Trainee at Sugar Mediaz.

Key Projects/Campaigns You’ve Been Part Of

Launch campaigns of various BIG Cinemas in 2009-10.

Movie-based promotions

Media planning and buying for 100 odd cinemas, pan India.
Digital and online promotions for BIG Cinemas

Most challenging project/campaign you’ve been part of? What made it challenging?

A 360 degree campaign for the launch of Sangam BIG Cinemas, which included using all sorts of marketing tools to reach out to the audience…

How did you start your career? What was your first step after completing BMM?

When I graduated, recession had already set in. Forget placements, lay-offs were the more “in” thing.
For many months an unending struggle followed, after which I can say I struck gold. Thankfully, with my list of internships and an impressive academic record I landed the job of a Trainee at BIG Cinemas.

Were you clear about which field you wanted to get into right from the beginning? What helped you take your leaps?

When I initially joined BMM, I knew I had to become a journalist. Half way through, I decided to go back to Arts and be a Psychologist. Then, the mad ad world beckoned..so I decided Copywriting would be THE THING. However, fate had something else in store…and here I am…enjoying Marketing, with every new experience and learning to take home.

Any particular incident that helped you discover your career option?

It wouldn’t be wrong to say it was the recession!! It was more of a calamity, more than an incident. But again, it’s nice to keep trying new stuff that interests you…I’ve tried everything from events to RJing, to Film and TV Production and now to market India’s largest cinema chain.

BACK TO COLLEGE

Does being a BMMite give you an edge over others? Yes/No – Please elaborate

BMM students come with a basic knowledge of the media industry. That apart, it’s really subjective. It can only get you an interview. How you decide to use your talents, depends solely on you…

Do the subjects in BMM help you know the reality of the job? Is there any place for theory in the industry you’re in?

Theory and practical knowledge go hand-in-hand. I suggest not just learning through books. Get into summer internships, even if its just to know your likes and dislikes. Besides, it looks good on your resume!

BMM or BMM from a particular college? Does it make a difference?

There are so many colleges offering BMM these days. As far as the course and staff is concerned, most of the profs tour all the colleges. But surely, a reputed college makes the opposite person sit up and notice.

Did you complete any internship(s) – where, when, how was the experience?

As I mentioned earlier, I interned with three totally different companies: events, voicing and TV & film production. It gave me a chance to learn how the industry works, and what I really like doing.

Internships during BMM – are they relevant in the long run?

In the long run, a work experience of a few years would score over a month long internship. But you’d probably know what each media house is about, if you’ve tried working at different kinds of agencies. It’ll help you decide what you want in the future.

Work Ex or Higher Studies? What’s your pick? Why?

Most corporate houses suffer from the Glass Ceiling Syndrome. You may have X years of work ex, but it’s the MBA tag that will get you to become the CEO. On the other hand, ad agencies or event companies value experience to a great extent as well…

BMMBOXER’S TAKE

BMM is the most fulfilling experience, where you can explore your wackiest side.

Your biggest achievement till date Ranking 1st overall in BMM ’09 – All Mumbai.

You regret Not having a couple of years more..to enjoy BMM. I truly miss the before-presentation catfights!

Your favorite subject in BMM Lots of ’em: PR, Intro to Advertising, Literature…

Your hangout adda during BMM Jai Hind College & Mocha.

Define your job in one sentence An extension of BMM which adds to your bank balance, instead of taking from it!

Your favorite professor at college Again, many of ’em: Prof. Varalakshmi, Prof.Omkar Patki, Prof.Vidyanand Joshi..

Your biggest goof up at work Ooops!I don’t want to lose my job. Not YET.

YOUR TAKE

The journey so far…and where I see myself going I know I’m happy with what I’m doing. I’d like to study a li’l more (just to be tagged along with the MBAs of the world) and surely start up something of my own, soon.

My Success Mantra Love what you do. And what you don’t love, at least try a 100 times before you give up.

5 Tips for BMMites

1.       Enjoy it while it lasts, the crazy deadlines, fights, sleepy presentations …

2.       Respect the profs, ask questions and stay in their good books. Always.

3.        If you’re confused with what you’re going to end up doing after BMM, don’t be.

Your job doesn’t necessarily depend on the subject you’ve graduated in.

4.        Bunk lectures. But in moderation.

5.       DO NOT listen to everything that everyone advises. Even me. Follow what works best for you…

BMM From? ICL College

Year Completed BMM 2006

Other Educational Qualifications (PG/UG/Etc) PG in Advt. & PR – MKU

Status Single

CAREERBOX

Professional Experience 4 years

You Currently Work At Sr. Copywriter at Thoughtshop Advt. & Films Production

Your daily routine Eat ideas, sleep ideas, drink ideas, potty ideas….Live ideas.

Organization(s) You Worked At Before

Marching Ants & Thoughtrains and as a consultant for FEI Cargos and Syntex.

Key Projects/Campaigns You’ve Been Part Of

Zapak.com, Rodies V, Fun Cinmas, Fun Republic, Mobilenxt, Parle Krackjack, Parle Milano, Parle Hide n Seek, NDTV Imagine, Olay, Gillette… phew… ICE essentials Lingerie, Pantaloons, Pause Wines, Nirma Detergent, ICICI Fellowship, Hotel Sahara Star, Tikona broadband… d list longer… basically, every category you say.

Most challenging project/campaign you’ve been part of? What made it challenging?

I would rate ICE Essentials as d most difficult one out of the rest. I was 22 then. At 22, guys you know, how difficult it would be to concentrate when you are working on a lingerie brand. And I’m supposed to do a print campaign on a category which is already wonderfully explored by the biggies in the industry. Brief being ‘comfort’, I managed to pull off a few insights. I’ll mention one of the headlines – If I was looking for support, I would look for a husband.

How did you start your career? What was your first step after completing BMM?

After BMM, I took a break for a few months to develop my folio. Got a break in Marching Ants. Folio is all that counts.

Were you clear about which field you wanted to get into right from the beginning? What helped you take your leaps?

I wanted to get into Journalism when I started. I loved writing. By the end of 1st yr, somehow, i was called by a small AD agency to work for them. It was a surprise but I took it. There’s where I realized, Copywriting is my field. I utilized my two years in degree learning all i could and making innumerable videos. My folio work had already begun there.

BACK TO COLLEGE

Does being a BMMite give you an edge over others? Yes/No – Please elaborate

Even being an IITian canot give an edge unless you create an edge. How you utilize your Degree time is what matters. Firstly, get clear in your head of what you want to do after graduation – asap.

Do the subjects in BMM help you know the reality of the job? Is there any place for theory in the industry you’re in?

Depends what department you are in. Theory helped me with arguments against my BDO and client servicing teams and the rest subjects like history and accounts got converted into ideas.

BMM or BMM from a particular college? Does it make a difference?

Guys, just for fun sake, i’ll confuse you more; most people in advertising today are either are BSc or Engineering pass-outs.
Bottom line – Advertising ignores colleges and marks. Your passion can drive you to self-confidence and eventually a promising future.

Did you complete any internship(s) – where, when, how was the experience?

I was hired to work by various small agencies during my degree. I considered that as my internship. I never had to apply anywhere for it. It was just word of mouth that spreads. Work gets noticed guys, even at college level.

Internships during BMM – are they relevant in the long run?

Internships help you grasp the basic professional jargon. So get your hand on them asap.

Work Ex or Higher Studies? What’s your pick? Why?

In creative dept., folio speaks. I did my PG so that my qualification should not be an issue in case any girl agrees to marry me.

BMMBOXER’S TAKE

BMM is transforming BMM towards the new age.

Your biggest achievement till date One of the very few copywriters in India to have 7 TVCs under his belt at this age.

You regret Realizing that smoking doesn’t help generate ideas and yet continuing smoking merrily.

Your favorite subject in BMM Your hangout adda during BMM Brand Building. No, it wasn’t copywriting.

Your hangout adda during BMM Nothing in particular. Any chai tapri would do.

Define your job in one sentence Generating ideas and writing scripts, headlines, body copies.

Your favorite professor at college Friends.

Your biggest goof up at work I almost broke the head of one of the Client Servicing guys. LMAO. Today he is the BDO at one of the most reputed agencies. LMAO.
Now the doors there are closed for me.
Goof up, not a regret. Still LMAO.

YOUR TAKE

The journey so far…and where I see myself going Well, I’ve survived Advertising so far. I manged to quit alcohol in the process. To be frank, there will come a time when I may have to compromise on the creative satisfaction part and ask for money. Still hopeful for the best.

My Success Mantra Observation rendered with a wacky twist.

5 Tips for BMMites

1)      Ask why. We are the second best creative people after scientists.

2)       ‘Impossible is nothing’. Don’t restrict yourself.

3)      Even a 6 yr old is creative. We have to be rationally creative. Find the balance.

4)      Be clear what you want to do after T.Y.

5)      If you have parents, don’t wander around searching for an IDOL.

You Currently Work At ISMT Ltd. – Branding & Communications – Asst. V.P.

Your daily routine Liaison with ad agencies, exhibition organizers, Publication houses and other vendors.  Meetings with senior management. Emails and more emails. Presentations. Occasional trips to Plants

Organization(s) You Worked At Before SparkleWork Films – Production – Assistant Director (2nd)

Key Projects/Campaigns You’ve Been Part Of

1. For ISMT Ltd: All brand building activities, corporate films, Project Management for participation in several exhibitions worldwide.

2. For TAAL Ltd: Corporate Re-branding exercise and Project Management for participation in Aero India 2011

3. For Indian Seamless Group: Corporate Brand Identity Creation

4. For SparkleWork Films: Pre and Post Production for (a) Bid2Win – reverse bidding show for TV (b) TV commercial for Asian Lights

Most challenging project/campaign you’ve been part of? What made it challenging?

Project Management for Power-Gen Europe (an exhibition held in Cologne, Germany). It was my first major international assignment and I had to work with a team that had people from different background (Stand building, Graphic design, Printing, Logistics, Hospitality, Production, Marketing, Finance etc.), stationed at different countries. Managing a gamut of activities with people across different time zones was challenging.

How did you start your career? What was your first step after completing BMM?

I was clueless what I wanted to do with my life till the 3rd year of BMM. One short film (that I made for Frames Film Festival 2006) changed all that. I knew I had to make films. So the first thing I did after BMM was to join a Production House and started assisting a TV producer/director.

Were you clear about which field you wanted to get into right from the beginning? What helped you take your leaps?

I joined BMM after 4 medical entrance exams, 3.5 months of engineering and 7 days of BSC. That should say a lot about how confused I was. Back then … Med, Engg, Archi, were the only “sensible” things to do for science grad.

I joined BMM because of 2 reasons (in addition to the fact that I had to do something quick). (a) It had Psychology in its 1st Semester and I had taken a fancy for the subject reading some books (b) the course content gave me an impression that it will teach me a little bit of everything … and that’s what I was looking for (not knowing what i wanted in particular) …

Regular projects, change in subjects every semester, Films and more films, college festivals, doing odd internships in summer breaks helped me take leaps. I didn’t have a plan. I know my moment of clarity came when I made my first short film. But I can only connect the dots in retrospect.

Any particular incident that helped you discover your career option?

The short film and the entire BMM experience helped me understand what I wanted to do. But my professional experience in the film and TV industry helped me understand about my career options.

BACK TO COLLEGE

Does being a BMMite give you an edge over others? Yes/No – Please elaborate

Yes .. I think for career based on liberal arts and sciences … it helps. I think it might also help one to discover oneself for the course is diverse and gives you a feel of everything.

Do the subjects in BMM help you know the reality of the job? Is there any place for theory in the industry you’re in?

Subjects give you a birds eye view. It will tell you where the pool is, show you the water, tell you stories about people who’ve been good or bad swimmers, suggest necessary equipment and may even give you some simulated survival tactics.

BMM or BMM from a particular college? Does it make a difference?

Yes it does. In addition to the “brand” of the institution itself, the quality of faculty, guest lecturers, industry interaction etc matter.

Did you complete any internship(s) – where, when, how was the experience?

In Boch&Ferns as a copywriter.

Internships during BMM – are they relevant in the long run?

Relevant for the short run. Important if you are seeking clarity. I would recommend an internship in every break.

Work Ex or Higher Studies? What’s your pick? Why?

Work Ex first .. Higher studies later. (and not the other way around).

BMMBOXER’S TAKE

BMM is What you make of it.

Your biggest achievement till date None to really brag about.

You regret None so far.

Your favorite subject in BMM Your hangout adda during BMM Understanding Cinema

Your hangout adda during BMM RD (Raj Dairy), Tiger’s Den and Coll. Canteen (in SIES Nerul)

Define your job in one sentence Making the Organization look good.

Your favorite professor at college I’ll let this pass.

Your biggest goof up at work I’m sure there are many but I can’t think of one in particular

YOUR TAKE

The journey so far…and where I see myself going Has been great …. I see myself discovering something new everyday
