Course Description:
The course provides a unique and exciting opportunity for those who wish to specialise in still and moving imagery, and work creatively across disciplines. The course integrates theory and practice across lens-based media, dissolving the traditional boundaries between still and moving image to encourage both original thinking and individuality within a lively, challenging community. Students will engage with the temporal and spatial significance of photography and film, and be supported through lectures, seminars, group workshops and tutorials.

Course Description:
The course is intended to provide students with a range of theoretical and practical training. This is a variant of the established Film and Television MA, introduced in the early 1990s in response to demand from within the film archive world for a course of training that would combine practical and critical elements. UEA was the ideal place for this because of the presence on campus of the pioneering regional set-up, the East Anglian Film Archive, and because of the established MA programme with its strong film and television history component.

Course Description:
The MA in Film Studies offers students the chance to choose their own pathway through the degree. Through individual module choice, students can focus on historical, theoretical or practical modules, choosing from topics as diverse as genre, national cinema or reception studies.
Teaching is mainly in the form of seminars and screenings, although the compulsory module taken in the Autumn semester will have a lecture component. There will also be opportunities to attend additional talks and discussion groups on a wide variety of film, television and media topics. The principle areas of study are: historical, theoretical and critical approaches to film and television studies; a focus on specific film and television genres; the role of national cinema; researching and interpreting the film and television audience; planning and producing audio-visual work; exploring the social and cultural role of film and television.

  • Exercises and discussions
  • Group meetings and one-to-one tutorials.

Eligibility Criteria: The course is designed for people currently working in the media industry and also those who are looking to enter the industry. The normal requirement is an honours degree or comparable qualification, but appropriate experience will also be taken into account and all applications are treated on an individual basis.

The development of DAB, Internet Radio and Podcasting bring with them opportunities for reaching new audiences and for using sound in fresh, exciting ways. At the same time the chance to operate low-budget, small-scale community stations puts this powerful tool in the hands of charities and companies seeking to reach local audiences directly and professionally. The Course aims to offer you the skills to work in radio and audio production in an industry where an understanding of a variety of media and platforms is increasingly important.
