Ten things you’re DEFINITELY going to miss about BMM!

Posted on 27 June 2010 by BMMBoxer

Here is a list of the top 10 things about BMM that you won’t value while you’re in it, but will miss like hell once you’re out of BMM…

The Hard Life!

By the end of the 3 years you are going to get so used to the hard life one month prior to the project submission deadline and exams that you will actually start missing all the running around and sleepless nights.

Photoshop!

During the course of the 3-years you must have used Photoshop so much trying to make that perfect cover page that you’ll only end up photoshopping your own facebook pictures after BMM.

The Politics!

You think only small time celebs on TV indulge in politics? In BMM you will also find yourself doing the same. You will trade friendships for marks, talk behind backs to gain new friends (read: a better group) etc. No matter how negative this is, you will still miss it.

ECS Class!

This is one of the best things about the BMM curriculum. You have ECS twice! Just sit back and relax in this class. Meditate if you wish, nothing can harm you here- neither written nor the project. You sure will miss this.

Waking up Late!

The BMM lectures are the most convenient. They let you sleep right till 9:30 am most of the times since most colleges keep lectures at 11 or so. When you work, you definitely have to report by 10:00 am. So that ruins all the happiness you were used to for the last 3 years.

The Amazing Teachers!

The teachers in BMM seem humble but are superheroes in reality. They are awesome in their respective professions and you should feel thankful for having such professionals teach you especially in a graduation course. You won’t value them of course during the course, but will miss their creative classes later on.

Throwing Attitude!

Let’s face it! The BMM course is considered to be an elite course. In most colleges, the BMM section prefers staying away from the rest of the college. You move around the college like you own it. And other students hate you for it. In the real world you won’t get the privilege to act this snobbish, so make the most while you’re in it but don’t get used to all the attention.

Chain Mails!

For as long as you last in BMM your whole life is dependent on the chain e-mails doing the rounds. You get to know of the lecture schedule, exam timetable, notes, key to the answers in the question bank and class gossip through these chain mails. Your inbox will start to look empty and boring once you pass out and there won’t be much reason for you to check your mail.

The Unity!

Even there are ten different groups in class; to the other colleges your class will stand united. That is a good thing. Even the unity is fake; it’s pretty amusing that to the world you all seem like the best of friends. This really helps during fests. I doubt you’ll experience this elsewhere in life.

The Projects!

The projects in BMM are the most stimulating and encouraging ones. You can get as unrealistic you want, which doesn’t really work in the professional life after that. There is a very healthy competition, people learn from each other and your creativity is at its best here! You won’t find such stimulating projects in any other graduating course.

Travel: The Couture Way of Living!!!

Posted on 27 June 2010 by BMMBoxer

One of my passions from the ever growing list is TRAVEL. I am always on the prowl through brochures, pamphlets, while surfing the net on travel websites; reliving the moments that I have captured in the past or an attempt to what the future travels behold.

I try and find a home away from mine in all these places. This fascination for new places and new memories has been imbibed into me by my parents. Since I was a kid I have been a travel freak developing the passion to bring out the essence in the new and old, seen and unseen places. I might even be found taking different routes to the same destination thanks to my craze for new experiences. My dad also loves the different avenues and aspects of traveling and I do share similar thought.

Basically quality time spent matters way above quantity of time spent. So may it be with friends or with family; for a day or 10days; quality sustains them all!!
At times when I am unable to make to trip or plans happen to fizzle out due to unavoidable circumstances I glance through travel info documents or websites and create a world of my own. Travel is definitely my stress buster and acts anti-depressants on quite a few occasions.

My next plan is to go pack back on my own. I want to experience the feeling of being by oneself in an unknown land.

And that thrill is yet to be seen…..

Multiple brand edorsers

Posted on 27 June 2010 by BMMBoxer

Before signing Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the youth ambassador for Dabur Chyawanprash, Dabur conducted some consumer checks to find out which young celebrity represented the values of inner strength and leadership.

Many other brands however, did not consider it fit to tread the middle path and drop long-standing brand ambassadors for new ones, who in most cases also happen to be younger. But it is not easy. One has to worry about the brand’s value proposition in co-relation to the brand ambassador. If the brand ambassador is overplaying the product value proposition, it is important to change the ambassador.

Brand ambassadors need to be changed to refresh the brand communication citing the example of Tata Tea’s Taj campaign which had Zakir Hussain for 15 years. The brand got stuck to its association with Zakir and it took them a long time to break out of it.

A range of brands have taken on board the new generation of celebrities such as Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Dhoni. Experts say, celebrity endorsements surely help in magnifying a campaign, but what needs to be remembered is that a celebrity is generally used to impart credibility and aspiration to a brand.

Shah Rukh Khan and Sachin Tendulkar are no more a part of PepsiCo’s Youngistan campaign. Youngistan is inhabited by Kapoor, along with Dhoni and Padukone. Some of the other brand ambassador changes at PepsiCo include replacing Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid with emerging cricketers Ishant Sharma and Rohit Sharma.

Katrina Kaif has replaced Sushmita Sen in Pantene, the shampoo, and Aishwarya Rai for Nakshatra, the jewellery brand. More recently, Genelia D’souza took the Fanta baton from Rani Mukherji.

However, an association with consumers built through an ambassador for years cannot be done away with in a hurry. Pepsi used Ranbir and Deepika in a commercial with Shah Rukh for before phasing out the older star. The company has roped in Kareena Kapoor for launching a sub-brand under Kurkure, but retains its old ambassador, Juhi Chawla.

The association is also about perception— they not only possess great aspiration value with the youth but also mirror the dreams of millions.
A long-standing association with our brand ambassadors has benefited us greatly in connecting with the core audience. Thus it is no harm to have more than one endorser for a brand. But this switching between endorsers must be carefully regulated as it may lead to confusion for the customer resulting in the drop in product sales.

High BMM Cut offs makes it an off limit course for masses!

Posted on 19 June 2010 by BMMBoxer

Some Number Crunching

Mumbai can accommodate only 3000+ odd students for Bachelor of Mass Media in approx 50 colleges.

Though the number of applicants is assumed to be more than 50,000.

Xavier’s BMM Department did not even a second list for BMM students…The quota of 60 students has already been taken by toppers and rankers.

All the top colleges have just 5-6 BMM seats vacant in the open category.

June 22 will be the last hope for all the students as the last list will be put up.

Flashback

Not a long time ago, BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media) and BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) were considered as alternate options for Commerce students. The courses looked and sounded cooler than the usual Bcom route. But, times have changed and so have the perceptions. These decade old courses have now become top priority for students, not only in Commerce, but also in Arts and Science. Apart from these, the decision to scrap the entrance exams has affected student’s big time.

What has made Bachelor of Mass Media one of the most popular courses? Here are some of things that have got it in the limelight:

• Course Flow: Practical + Theory Approach makes it a hit.

• Course Structure: The course is divided into 6 semesters with new subjects each semester. Thus, teaching more than 30+ subjects in a time span of three years. Subjects are related to mass media and give the students an insight into the Media Industry.

• Faculty: A mix of In-house and Visiting faculty from the industry strikes a connection and makes the students well connected to the industry.

• Projects: Not to forget the amazing project work done during the three years. It really raises the bar as far as creativity and technology is concerned.

BMMBox Viewpoint

We all know how good it feels to actually get admissions into a top college that you always wanted to go to, but due to the limited number of seats in each college, this may not happen for now. BUT, don’t lose hope and read ahead:

• Apply and Opt for a college close to your residence, so you get more time to concentrate on your projects and have more fun 🙂

• Study well in your first year and you always stand a chance to change your college in the second year.

• You can study in any college and still enjoy BMM by being a part of all the BMM festivals that happen across the city 🙂

Cheers!!!

Goodluck.
