Drugs & Teens: A Match That’ll End in Hell

Posted on 12 September 2012 by Meher Manda (Contributing Writer)

Long ago, when you were young, a drug referred to the tablet your mother gave you when you would catch a cold. And with innocence, sweeps out the need to be prudent. All of a sudden, thrust into the big bad world of college, stress, adulthood and a prospective career, the need to look out for companions and the need to fit in is much higher.

And are drugs an offshoot of this need? That, I believe, is debatable.

The recent news piece commenting on cops busting drug users outside popular SoBo colleges, did not surprise me, let alone shock. This could be attributed to the lack of ignorance amongst college-goers regarding the increase of drug assumption among the youth. But while we argue about the right and wrong of it all, it is equally important to understand as to why this is slowly becoming such a recurring phenomenon.

With cops resorting to dressing as collegians in order to track down on college going drug users, the entire incident has stemmed up an alarming fact. That perhaps druggies are not as inhibited as one would expect them to be.  While the common notion was that people who consumed drugs did so in the safe confinements of their homes, or places that would not attract much attention, this flamboyant sense of usage, especially amongst undergraduates is a reason to worry.

While it is a common notion to blame urban modernisation to this, the reasons run a lot deeper. Apart from the fact that many teenagers are dealing with stress related symptoms and continuing forms of neglect, one may also look at the allure of the rock and roll fueled drug usage. Also, with an increased need to judge and ostracize, there is a common understanding to resort to antics as such, however unfavourable, to fit in, and be a part of a group.

Also, the taboo subject that drugs consumption is amidst the patriarchal set-up is one such another problem. You see, as we near adulthood, our parents will forever tell us to not smoke and to not consume drugs, because they term it to be bad. And the societal structure is such that they feel if we were to ever be caught doing anything remotely taboo, it would bring shame upon the family.

The way we are approaching the problem of drug consumption is entirely wrong. It is important for the vulnerable, in this case, teenagers, to understand what the consequent effect of their decision is. Even stories of glamorous drug consumers like Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presly and Amy Winehouse, amongst others, have been victims of drug overdose. It is important to create an awareness regarding the perils of drug usage. One must understand that in India, drugs are readily available at optimum rates. And it is important for us to move beyond the horizon of college students and realise that children as young as 10 years old, living in dingy slums, are vulnerable to organic drugs, like hash.

Busting private parties, while may be the need of the hour in order to regulate circulation of illegal drugs, is no way to educate youngsters justifying the illegality of such substances. And perhaps, just perhaps hope that the stark truth behind the disguise for a few moments of bliss dissuades someone to use it.

Sasta Hangout of the Week: Jay Sandwich (Linking Road)

Posted on 06 September 2012 by Deep Chabbria (Contributing Writer)

On the very busy street of Linking road, the ‘rasta’ shopping paradise of many, stands the busiest stall of them all – Jay Sandwich. At the corner just outside R.D National College where the lane turns left from the main trunk road, nests this Mumbai sandwich joint. For a whopping 27 long years this place has been feeding college students and shoppers alike from 9 am to 9 pm day in and day out.

Known for the vast options it offers and the quality that it delivers, Jay sandwich is the preferred hangout spot for around 800people/day. The sandwich menu is long and made to suit each one’s whims and fancies. Starting from the usual ‘sada mumbai sandwich’ which is priced at INR 25 and going on to the expensive and fancy item like the ‘big grilled cheese sandwich’, which is priced at  INR 95.  Old school bread crafts like jam toast, bread butter jam toast and bread butter chutney are also quick sellers. The introduction of a variety of sandwiches with paneer and cheese and pizza’s surely favour the taste buds of the ones who like their meal large!

My treat this time was the king of the charts, the cheese masala toast. The very filling combination of potato mash with tomatoes, layers of cheese and toast bread sunk in Amul butter was surely the most relishing sandwich I have ever tasted. The spicy green chutney and sauce added to the necessary tanginess and all this when downed with a glass of orange Rasna made me happiest man in Bandra. For INR 55 my day was made and the craving of having an awesome sandwich was satiated.

My feast!

“Bas students ka pyaar hai jo humein chalata hai,” said the smiling owner of the bread empire. So the next time you are tired after a long bargain at Linking Road or get done with a taxing long lecture, you know the perfect place to re-energize. I very rightly claim Jay to be the ‘Sandwich ka Sardar’ for that scrumptious experience. Yahan ki Sandwich ki JAY!!!

The man behind the stall.

The Beatles and their Coolth

Posted on 05 September 2012 by Meher Manda (Contributing Writer)

“Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about.”

As I sit down to write this article about one of my favourite bands of all time, I cannot help but listen to their songs seeking inspiration. I am absolutely ‘gobsmacked’ [they’re British] when I hear my most loved Beatles song, Strawberry Fields Forever. What is it about The Beatles that 50 years since they’re arrival on the music scene still captivates listeners around the world? What was it about them that generates an appreciative hysteria among music lovers?

As I sit here, and try to pen the cult that the Beatles were, the most important point to be made would be the Beatles themselves. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrisson made what can now be deemed a rock and roll classic. While The Beatles beautifully indulged themselves in pop, psychedelic rock, classic rock, and came at a time when Elvis Presly was the rock and roll hero, the focus for rock and roll enthusiasts got conveniently shifted from America to the UK. And just when the Beatles were around, the Bee Gees were crooning Joh Travolta’s story to the disco and subsequent death. People reveled and celebrated the average street monger and his story, and here were four boys in the middle of the most ultimate popularity spiral that music had ever known.

Bringing to birth, ‘Beatlemania’, the band created such an intense mass hysteria even while enjoying a no. 1 position in the UK, much before their touchdown in the U.S. While the band brought about a new style in album covers with Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, White Album, (the covers having been revisited and imitated countless times) it also brought to the fore the creative genius of the band’s most influential members, Lennon and McCartney who perhaps had one of the most successful lyric partnerships of all time. And while the avant-garde music of The Beatles was one of the biggest reasons that made the band so popular, one needs to understand the immense impact the band had on society. While Lennon, a subtle atheist once commented that the Beatles were more popular then Jesus, just perhaps, he had measured the band’s impact just about correctly. Whatever The Beatles did, sang or spoke would be revisited, come what may.

The influence that the Beatles enjoy cannot be mentioned in mere words. During the group’s decline, as Lennon slowly went on to form a partnership with artist Yoko Ono and the others kick-started their own solo careers, they still remained in the news. With their songs enjoying countless covers by esteemed artists like Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Elton John, Frank Sinatra among others, they could perhaps be called the most revisited musical band of all time. Lennon’s peace movement with Ono and their “make love bed” made further paths to the hippies culture of 70’s, only to be fueled by their unabashed admittance to drug usage.

Which brings us back to one eternal question- What makes The Beatles eternal?

Beautiful music notwithstanding, lyrics that seems to transcend harsh social realities and enigmatic personalities of Lennon and McCartney can easily be the summarizing factors. Today, music lovers with a conscience cannot seem to not love Yhe Beatles and they still continue to be a cult. And while in another part of the world, people are trolling a heavily criticised young pop-star who claims to be as big as The Beatles, I end this and silently rue, that no he is not, and no, not many can be.

The Best & The Bad: Toyota Corollo & Nature’s Essence Age Defense

Posted on 03 September 2012 by Gaurav Gandhi (Contributing Writer)

Best: Toyota Camry – “Leadership is an art of Persuasion, not Domination”
The price of the The All New Camry being 23.5 lakhs (ex-showroom), it definitely has a niche market. The well executed ‘leadership’ campaign carries an aspirational factor, as it subtly states that it is designed only for leaders. Also, they have represented the right idol for the brand – Abraham Lincoln. This helps elevates the positioning of the brand.
The media planning is perfect and adds to the brand recall. All in all, this is one well executed print ad.

Bad: Nature’s Essence Age Defense Ad
This one is a full page ad, yet looks very shabby. The use of three different fonts adds to the shabby look of the ad. Use of scientific terms seems to be invalid in this case as the potential consumer wouldn’t really understand such terms. Therefore, this is certainly not the right strategy for the creative. Instead, focusing on the glamour quotient alone would have worked wonders.
I believe when you spend on a full page ad, you must make sure you have the right thing to show. Nature’s Essence fails to impress on all counts. Hope the product isn’t as bad the ad though!
