Consumer complaints against Unwanted-72, I-Pill TVCs

Posted on 10 September 2009 by BMMBoxer

Unwanted-72, a product of Mankind Pharma Ltd and I-Pill, an offering from drug maker Cipla Ltd are both under the scanner for their latest TV commercials. The ads of these two products have been upheld by Consumer Complaints Council (CCC), as five complaints have been registered with the council.

The objection has been raised with the positioning of the two products, promoting the drugs as regular contraceptives and misrepresenting abortion.

Ram Teke, deputy drug controller general of India (DCGI), said, “We have ethical concerns about these advertisements, they are not projecting the message clearly that these pills are emergency contraceptives and not regular contraceptives. We are awaiting the responses from the companies.”

However, the ad agencies behind the concept of the two commercials do not feel the same. “The campaign is trying to create awareness among youth that abortion is not the only route if no precaution was used. I don’t see anything objectionable in the message.” said Dhaval Vyas, manager of the Unwanted-72 account at Prachar Communications, which has created the ad.
Network Advertising, the advertising agency that created the I-Pill ad also defended it. “We don’t find nothing offensive about the the way the message is projected in the I-Pill ad.” says an spokesperson for the agency.

Alan Collaco, secretary general, ASCI , said, “We have received about five complaints on these ads and the matter is currently with the CCC, which will take a call on whether it should be pulled off the air.”

ASCI is the self-regulatory body of the advertising industry and its advice, following queries or complaints on advertisements released in the Indian media, is mostly followed by advertisers and their agencies.

Incredible India’s domestic campaign goes to Crayons

Posted on 10 September 2009 by BMMBoxer

The creative duties of Incredible India’s domestic campaign have been given over to Crayons Advertising. The agency will also look at the campaign execution in print media. The Incredible India campaign has been initiated by the Government of India to promote India as a tourist destination. Crayon has earlier done impressive campaigns for Kerala and Himachal Tourism.

Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has allotted Rs 50 crore for the domestic campaign, which will include all forms of media. Television and print advertising form a significant part of the media mix for the domestic campaign.

Leena Nandan, joint secretary, MoT, says the sector is growing and tourists are looking at new destinations and new experiences. The Indian tourism sector is poised for a quantum leap and the government would like to work and carry the process forward, she says.

“To meet this challenge the sector needs experienced agencies and quality campaigns. We are delighted to assign the creative’s to Crayons for Incredible India’s print account. The print ads will be released through DAVP and the Ministry of Tourism will decide where and how to place the campaign in the medium.”

Ranjan Bargotra, president, Crayons Advertising, mentioned that the campaign will go on till the end of this year. He also said that the campaign will promote established tourism destinations of India and will talk about the country’s heritage and natural beauty like the Nilgiri Mountains and Ladakh.

Crayons seem to be exploring and adding some exciting colors in the Incredible India campaign.

BEST to showcase social documentaries by BMM students

Posted on 09 September 2009 by BMMBoxer

The Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) students were in for a huge surprise on Wednesday. Little did they know that participating in an inter-collegiate short film competition would help them reach out to a wider audience, courtesy BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport). BEST has decided to showcase the five winning documentaries by screening them on the new LCD TVs installed in the buses.

The short film competition was organized by Save the Children India, an NGO which works towards empowerment of women and children. Entries were invited from all BMM colleges across the city. The films were judged by ad agency Ogilvy & Mather which also awarded the winning team with an internship at their agency.

Five films were shortlisted from among 44 entries, which poured in from 30 colleges. Burhani College students bagged the first prize for their touching portrayal of a college girl as a trafficking victim. “It is great to know that our film will reach such a huge audience. When we made the documentary, we only wanted to highlight the crime,” said the winners Hatim Katawala and Nazim Khan. The other winning documentaries came from National College, Chandibai Himatmal Mansukhani College and Jai Hind College.

The 60 second documentaries will be screened for eight hours daily for a month in peak hours, the sole objective being making the public more aware about the issue of human trafficking.

Actress Raveena Tandon, who was present during the screening, said, “I was touched by the films and even had goosebumps while watching them. It is really great to know that these boys have portrayed the feelings experienced by women during such situations.”
