St.Xaviers College – Its “Zeitgeist” all the way!

The first time the students came up with the idea of a Media Fest in St.Xaviers College, the idea seemed almost laughable. “The college has never had a full fledged media fest- till now! Building a fest from scratch is by far the most challenging thing Ive done as a BMM student”, says Lehen Gafoor, Chairperson. But yet, Zeitgeist 2010 saw the likes of Shabana Azmi, Amol Gupte and Shishir Joshi holding dialogues and debates with students of over 15 BMM colleges over Mumbai.

The college was buzzing with activity, as people filtered in and out to spot the photo exhibits that dotted the garden of the college, screenings of student-made ads and films, and other theme-based events that media encompasses. The theme “Time Machine”, highlighted the need for young media professionals to solve contemporary problems,by learning from the past.

This year incidentally marks the 140-year anniversary of the college. Events will take place throughout the year, with special lectures and guest speakers.” This fest has added to the celebration”,says Mrs.Madhuri Raijada, Head of the Media Department.

At the end of Zeitgeist, Wilson College was declared the indisputed winner, followed by Jai Hind College in second place. “All the colleges who attended the fest were most supportive, and just so friendly! It was an amazing atmosphere of camraderie between colleges”, the students agree unanimously. And Zeitgeist, literally meaning the “spirit of the times”, captured just that.

So what do these students want to achieve from here? “A lot, but first, please, we need a good night’s sleep!”
