3/19/1985

BMM From? SIES (Nerul) College

Specialization Journalism

Year Completed BMM 2006

Other Educational Qualifications (PG/UG/Etc) none

CAREERBOX

Professional Experience 3 years

You Currently Work At Reuters India-Editorial-Correspondent

Your daily routine
Tracking corporates for breaking news, following the stock markets, monitoring stock exchange website etc..

How did you start your career? What was your first step after completing BMM?

I started my career with Reuters. I got in touch with the ex South Asia editor of Reuters who had come to SIES (Nerul) to deliver a lecture. After a quick round of interview I was taken in as a trainee and was confirmed soon after.

Were you clear about which field you wanted to get into right from the beginning? What helped you take your leaps?

Yes, I always knew I wanted to be a journalist even before I joined BMM. Self-motivation
and determination has always helped me reach my goals.

Any particular incident that helped you discover your career option?

I started freelancing for Times of India’s local supplement – New Bombay Plus – after my class 12th exams. Writing on different beats really gave me a lot of exposure and helped me learn more about on the field reporting.

BACK TO COLLEGE

Does being a BMMite give you an edge over others? Yes/No – Please elaborate

Well it does in some ways but for a journalist I believe it is most important to have a nose for news. If you get that right, you are a good journalist! I basically enjoyed the final year of BMM, as subjects were related to my chosen career unlike in the first two years. The course definitely helps you shed inhibitions and make you understand the basics of reporting, which seem to have been lost now.

Do the subjects in BMM help you know the reality of the job? Is there any place for theory in the industry you’re in?

Well, in my college we were given a project to publish a Navi-Mumbai news tabloid once a
week. That was very practical and helped us learn the nuances of reporting, writing, editing, co-ordination, page designing etc. Theory and practical go hand in hand, I’d say. There is room for both and I think BMM balances that.

BMM or BMM from a particular college? Does it make a difference?

No, I don’t think so. I wouldn’t say SIES (Nerul) is a very elite college but I’m doing good for myself. I can say that for my batchmates too. This career is about creative people… College doesn’t really make much difference if you know what you want.

Did you complete any internship(s) – where, when, how was the experience?

I did a summer internship with ANI – Asian News International. Besides, I was a freelance writer for New Bombay Plus for about 2 years since 2003.

Internships during BMM – are they relevant in the long run?

Yes, they do help. They help you understand the industry you are interested in. Besides, internships also help u understand whether you really want to continue in this industry/sector.

Work Ex or Higher Studies? What’s your pick? Why?

Work Ex. Like I said, in journalism if you can differentiate between news and non-news you are there!

  • ANANDI DARPEL

    THIS goes to Swati ….
I wish to be a freelancer that adds to my qualificatins i have done translation & french too so wat is freelancing about? how does one start with it?

  • Swati

@Omkar: I wouldnt know if there are any “openings” for interns in any news house but generally newspapers/mags/ and other media houses are forever on a hunt for newbies as trainees. There are no tips as such: you just need to get in touch with the editors and convince them why they should invest time to train you.
    @Rajesh: Thanks
@Madhu: Work environment differs from org to org and the type of media you are in. As a TV reporter you have to slog day in and day out to get the news first. As a wire reporter you have to be very very quick, sharp and alert. Newspapers-you should be willing to work at any time of the day. There is a lot of pressure because of growing competition and at times it is not as well paying as you’d imagine. But if you have sharp news judgement, good writing ability and soft skills you can climb up the ladder. Journalists get to travel to different cities and as you grow you can take a posting in another country as well.
@Amit: You have to take a take call on where your interest lies. Regional media is rapidly growing in India and lot of media orgs are investing/expanding their regional ops. So it wouldnt be a bad choice but then your options and in turn growth will be limited. So think about it and make the right decision.
@Anandi: You want to be a freelancer in what? newspaper/television/mag or something else. For newspaper or mag: You need to directly get in touch with the ed of the publication you’re interested in and show them your writing samples and may be discuss some ideas. If they like you, they will buy you!
    Cheers!

  • Aaditya Kelkar

    Hi Swati,
Is it important 2 do a PG course like MCJ & does it matter in the long run like for promotions?

  • Swati

@Aaditya: Learning never hurts. Some organisations insist on a PG degree for recruitments, specially television media. It may (v negligible chance) affect promotions or other growth chances going forward. I’ve not done PG myself and it has not affected my career as such but again it entirely depends upon the organisation you’re working with. If I may give a suggestion, I’d say it is better to specialise on a suject of your choice:Social science, economics, treasury, creative writing, hospitality etc so that you have a command on the subject which you want to pursue.

  • Ayesha

    hello mam
I am doing my B.A,have just got the results of the first year and the second year has not begun yet.
I was planning to do my majors in economics and then try for M.A in Media and Cultural studies(my first preference) or M.S.W from TISS . But just the day before yesterday i came across colleges in Mumbai offering Bachelors in Mass Media and unfortunately i am late and the admissions are over(if there is a vacancy i may get a call ).But i am really interested in doing BMM as i feel it will help me for my P.G and my interest lies there. Do you think it is worth to joining BMM next year and loosing 2yrs.
    Please guide me.

  • http://www.bmmbox.com BMMBoxer

I guess you could finish your BA and take up Masters in a mass communication course as your Post Graduation Offer. Two Years is a little too much to let go. So meanwhile you could look at the various options you could explore for PG.

Hope this helps. Let us know about what you decide.

    Regards,
    BMMBoxer.

  • Ayesha

Thank you very much… I have decided that i’ll go with your advice as i have got the same from my parents and relatives.

hie……. i gave my 12th boards …..am from the arts stream….i have plans 2 do bmm (bachelors of mass media) ..but m really confused as m nt a very extrovert person n i hv heard dat a person need 2 be an extrovert to do this course .m also worried about the presentations involved with this course..kindly guide me on this .

  • http://www.facebook.com/swati.jaipandey Swati Pandey

First u must know y u want to do bmm? Is it because uv heard about it n think its cool to be a bmm grad or coz u really thk this fits into yr career plan? Secondly, that u need to be an extrovert fr this course is not true.u gotta be confident of yrself, thats all thats needed.as far as presentations are concerned, if u r sincere and have a bit of creativity in you it wil all fall in place. These presentations r not tough, in fact they r the easier bits and a lot of fun too…bmm profs give immense room for creativity and thats what make the whole exp different frm the vanilla arts or commerce courses.
    I hope this helps…
    Good luck
    Cheers

Hi Neet, freenlancing is basically being able to work for different publications/organisations onassignment basis. So, basically you dont earn a salary, you get a lumpsum amount for each assignment. So, there are freelance journos, photogs, cameramen. As far as French is concerned, dont thnk it will help much in journalism unless u want to go to France and report out of there… If you plan to work in foreign agencies such as Reuters, Bloomberg, AFP, AP it could be a plus.

  • Tushary93

well…i m frm d science stream..got 78 in hsc….hope to enter bmm…n i wud like to be a   free lance writer for newspapers n mags…n swati..cn u tell me how is d feeel wen u r in ur work ? bcoz i want my work to be my kinda thing….pls help me…

hi swati, i finished FY media studies in jain university, bangalore but i would like to shift to mumbai for SY and Ty.is it possible to do and if it is then what is the procedure?

  • Charit Jaggi

    swati,
like you said, college is immaterial, but i feel along with the course you need a company of people who themselves are innovative, creative and can provide you with exposure, so could you please list 2-3 top colleges that offer this course and their location.
    would be kind of you.
    thanks
