Recent trends of political system
Need to change image of politicians in minds of public: Advani
Chennai: Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Thursday stressed the need to change the image of the average Indian politician in the minds of the public who perceive him to be the root cause of all problems.
"I often tell my party colleagues that the principle task before any person in public life is to contribute to change the image of average politician. It’s not a pleasant image.... not a good image," he said at conference 'ThinkEdu' organised by The New Indian Express Group on Thursday.
The octogenarian leader pointed out that politicians are always in the limelight in a democracy, because of which citizens feel they are the 'culprits' and the real cause of various problems.
Advani recalled an instance when BJP was launched in 1980s of a new minister telling his driver he would drive the car that day, to which the man replied "one can run a government without any training, but not run a car without any training".
The BJP leader said he had recounted it only to emphasise that this was the image that an average politician has acquired today. "Therefore, we should be very particular to see that gradually this image is changed."
Turning to education, he said students should be taught skill development and nation building.
"I feel in the field of education also, it should be of the kind which teaches every student to be proud of his country. I mean patriotism.... Education of the kind that empowers ethics and character to people", he said.
Flaying the ruling UPA government at the Centre for by and large "neglecting" eduction in the country, he voiced concern over there being no proper discussions on the subject even in Parliament.
Advani said economic policy is talked about a lot in India, particularly in political circles, on whether it should be liberalised or in state control and so on. However there are no discussions on the education system, he said.
BJP President Rajnath Singh, who also spoke on the occasion, said India must explore its ancient knowledge and wisdom "as only when it realises it, will India's strength be proved in 21st century".
He said the education system in the country at present lacks vision and direction due to rampant politicisation and commercialisation, creating confusion among students.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dik**** said character building should be the top most priority, which should be taken to the entire society to enable nation building. "That is the need of the hour", she said.
Stressing the need for quality education, she said, "We should create an opportunity for all to access quality education. We should not politicise our education system. We should make it in accordance with our system".
Maharashtra police files FIR against Togadia for alleged hate speech
Nanded/New Delhi: Firebrand VHP leader Praveen Togadia was on Thursday booked by Police in Maharashtra for his alleged hate speech made in the state after the Centre pushed for action amid increasing demand to file a case.
According to Ahmed Javed, Additional Director General of Maharashtra police, an FIR was filed in a police station in Nanded in connection with the hate speech made on January 22.
Further details are awaited but it is being reported that the case was registered under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 505 (statements conducing public mischief) of the IPC.
As the demand for action against Togadia over his provocative speech intensified, the Maharashtra government was asked by the Centre to book the leader of the Hindu outfit if he is found to be violating laws after probing the charges.
The Maharashtra government ordered an inquiry into the provocative speeches made by Togadia against members of a particular community even as the state Minorities Affairs Minister Naseem Khan demanded today that it file a case against him.
The state government, which has assured the Centre at the highest level that they will take due legal process, was asked by the Centre to investigate allegations that Togadia made provocative speeches.
"The Home Ministry's advise is clear. Once they have confirmed forensic evidence, appropriate action as per law must be taken against Togadia," an official said in New Delhi.
Union Minister of State for Home RPN Singh said if Togadia's speech is inflammatory, the state government must take action against him.
The case was filed after the Congress-NCP government in the state reportedly ordered forensic examination of Togadia's speech for its alleged inflammatory contents.
At a public meeting at Bhokar town in Nanded district of Maharashtra on January 22-— details of which are now surfacing after a video-recording was posted online-— Togadia had allegedly attacked Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi and members of a particular community.
Owaisi was sent to jail on charges of delivering a hate speech at Nirmal town in Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh last month.
The VHP leader had also triggered a controversy by making an alleged speech on February 1 near Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh.
Naseem Khan said he had spoken to the Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil today. "He has ordered an inquiry (into Togadia's remarks)," Khan said in Mumbai.
Who Will Be The Next Ruling Party Of India For Coming General Election 2014"
Congress had an emphatic victory in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. UPA-2 started on a high by winning almost full majority on its own. However, their second term has been marred with controversies and corruption allegations. Starting with Commonwealth Games scam, every few months saw a new scam coming out like Adarsh Society scam and the biggest of all, the 2G scam. Fuel and commodity prices have risen sharply in the past few years adding to the woes of common man. Crusade against black money and corruption by Anna Hazare and to some extent baba Ramdev has only added to the woes of Congress. But Congress is shrewd and knows politics quite well. They know that offense is the best way to defend. For every scam or corruption news that comes out, they bounce back with equally controversial news against rival parties. Their projection of Rahul Gandhi, who has not yet proved any political sense, as a Prime Ministerial candidate may help them in their campaign build up to 2014 polls.
Main opposition party Bhartiya Janata Party was left down and out after the 2009 polls. BJP's arch enemy is not Congress but BJP itself. It's leaders have failed to capitalize on core issues of price rise and corruption against the Congress. They should have learned from how Congress and some smaller parties have been able to successfully use the anti-minority tag against the BJP for over two decades now. BJP has also lost a lot of mass appeal leaders over the years. Most popular elader in india Atal Behari Vajpayee has now retired from active politics. Charasmatic leader and face of modern India, Pramod Mahajan was killed in a tragic incident. Stalwarts like Govindacharya and Jaswant Singh were thrown out. Prime Ministerial candidate Murli Manohar Joshi has been made to sit on the sidelines with no influence on national level politics. L K Advani is close to retirement years and firebrand Sushma Swaraj hasn't proved to be a winner yet. That leaves the party with only one leader of mass appeal, Narendra Modi, who may not yet be ready to leave Gujarat and join National level politics. Besides, everyone knows Congress will play the anti-minority tag aginst him quite well. BJP has also destroyed its chances by not forming strategic alliances with other parties in states. It used to ahve an allaince with AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, Mamata Banerjee's TMC in West Bengal and BJD in Orissa, but they have all left BJP group now. BJP's loss has been Congress's gain.
Third Front parties have been reduced to play a minority role at the center over the past few years. Leaders like Lalu Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Jayalalitha, Mayawati are no longer king makers. Most of them have been left with no option then to support the ruling Govt, in this case the Congress. Left Front has already become non-existent after the debacle in 2011 Assembly elections and it'd be highly unlikely that they'd make any comeback by 2014. FOr the past few years, most third Front allies have been hob-nobbing with the Congress, which raises doubts on their very existence. Third Front was formed to combat BJP as well as Congress, but if you are going to chose Congress after the polls every time, then won't it better for people to vote for Congress directly? Third Front needs to get its priorities right and decide on thei future survival options, because as of now their future looks bleak.
The Contenders for India Elections 2014:
Though Congress may not admit it yet, but Manmohan Singh may be shown the door out, and Congress may prefer to field Rahul Gandhi as its Prime Ministerial candidate in 2014. it may be too ealryfor Rahul to lead the nation as he has not proven his political accumen yet, but after the negative reviews UPA-2 is gathering, Congress amy want to chnage Manmohan Singh. As for BJP, the choice may be between one last try for L K Advani and popular leader Narendra Modi.
