    Business Journalism & Ethics

Journalism has reached and uprooted every elements of society whether it is crime, religion, environment, government, fashion, business, entertainment etc. all of the above are known as specials beats in journalistic terms. Journalists prefer according to their choice, intellectual & knowledge on which beat they are going to work for. Every beat or we may say any particular information has its own value which differs from place to place & person to person. But since due to giant leap of globalization, arrival of MNCs & technological development business journalism has gained popularity & paved a way for aspiring business journalists for a bright career.

Business journalism basically deals with business and economy at global level. It includes news about corporations, stock markets, shares & debentures, marketing, production & everything which constitutes business activities but only of registered companies & corporations.

News channels & media outlets cover these events or occasions for acquaintance of general public regarding daily business issues. Being a business reporter is oneself a toughest personality, it requires in-depth & analytical knowledge of business hubs & also efficiency to understand matrix of structure of business sector as a whole. A prominent business reporter or journalist should possess all the needful skills which fulfil the aim to deliver flawless report convey accurate & fair information.

The need for journalism arrived for avoiding any kind of exploitation held in society. Hence, journalism has several ethics by which journalists work under the pretext of those ethics which are formulated legally or personally. Same as in journalism, business journalism has also certain ethics which should be followed by every business journalist & media personnel.

Today every media organization is running behind TRPs, readership & publicity. The race among themselves sometimes directly or indirectly encourages unethical values & activities which may not be liable.

Some of the ethics which should be followed are:-

    • Avoiding monetary advantages by any business firm for which they force to report or publish good & fake about them.
    • If you are a member of a particular company it doesn’t mean showing your company in good light.
    • Biased reporting about specific company or simply believing their publicity creates wrong image among public, which is unethical.
    • False representation of reports & information is regarded as offence. Journalists should pay special attention towards this, so that any false picture whether positive or negative should not be portrayed.
    • Good ties between management & business organizations forces to make changes in report which is also a part of unethical value & unfair.
    • Believing in sugar coated PR of companies & accepting allowances by them should be avoided.

All this leads to business journalism & its ethics.

Business magazines & media outlets are the ultimate mode of information between corporate world & people. These media outlets keep an eye on every update related to business & economy. As the technology has moved on to next level due to which internet has emerged as the fastest mode of information which has made easier for us to connect any time & anywhere for latest updates, it has emerged as new mode of information.

Government & administration has the legitimate authority to control economy of country. They have the right to question any specific company on suspicious grounds. And hence, especially during mergers & acquisitions steps are taken to avoid all the possible illegal activities.
But due to rise of corruption, link-ups between government officers & corporate owners media fails to showcase unethicality which takes place underneath secretly.

Here media outlets like magazines or news channels, media personnel i.e. reporters, journalists, tip-offs could act as watch dog upon corporate sector through their research & various tactics.

It’s hard for media to work as a watch dog 24x7 on whole of business structure. So media should firstly set their own ethics & guidelines so that they themselves don’t get stranded in such acts.

The conclusion is, business journalists or media persons can’t be tagged as real watchdog but can help in diminishing unethical activities which are affecting us & hampering the economic development of nation.

With the intention of betterment & development media can change the present situation. We just need to shift our focus more than our duties rather than profits. Unbiased & ethical media could encourage true sense of journalism & put a stop on such ill values by following ethicality.
