On 5th of December, 2012 Mr. S. Hussain Zaidi visited VG Vaze College (Mulund) to interact with the students. As we all know, Mr. Hussain Zaidi is a veteran crime reporter and author; he has covered the Mumbai mafia for nearly two decades. He has worked earlier with newspapers like Mid-Day, Mumbai Mirror, Indian Express and now is the resident Editor of Asian Age/ Deccan Chronicle in Mumbai. He has written highly acclaimed books like Black Friday (based on the 1993 blasts in Mumbai), Mafia Queens Of Mumbai (based on the female gangsters in Mumbai) and Dongri to Dubai (based on the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim).

Before actually seeing him, I was of the impression that Mr. Zaidi would not be willing to answer all questions or talk about himself but I am happy to say he proved me wrong. As he entered the college auditorium, I realized Mr. Zaidi is a thorough professional. Once on the stage, he gave a short and precise introduction of himself. He then proceeded to talk to us in a straight forward and polite manner. He shared experiences of his first job and was candid enough to talk about how he met the love of his life! The latter information was received amidst cheers from the crowd.

Mr. Zaidi spoke to the students present about the journalistic field of crime reporting. Many students asked him if crime reporting is an exciting and a glamorous field to work in, to which he answered, “Yes, the field is adventurous but devoid of glamour. We have to work hard to cover crime and sometimes we do face problems – not only professional but also personal.”

He confessed that he has not only faced life threatening situations, but has also been freely criticized for portraying his religion in a ‘particular’ manner. Mr. Zaidi, who is proud of his religion, counters this criticism and believes that as a journalist it is his duty to put forward the truth and facts.

No matter the time constraints, Mr. Zaidi answered all questions thrown at him. He also obliged students with autographs and clicked a photo or two too. We, at VG Vaze College, thoroughly enjoyed our interaction with him and do we hope we get to meet many a prominent personalities like him.
